McNeill Baur was founded six years ago by a group of former big law attorneys who continue to practice high value, strategic patent prosecution and client counseling but in a small firm environment. We have multiple unique opportunities for patent attorneys or agents specializing in the fields of chemistry and biology. 

We are looking for one or more attorneys or agents with a least 5 years relevant experience in complex patent prosecution and/or patent counseling. Candidates with prior litigation experience are encouraged to apply. Exceptional scientific and legal training from prestige universities and companies and/or firms is required. 

McNeill Baur attorneys are nationally recognized leaders in life sciences patent prosecution and counseling. The firm has been ranked as a recommended firm for patent prosecution for multiple years.

      • We strongly prefer an advanced biology or chemistry degree, preferably a PhD, from a superior institution.
      • We particularly seek candidates with a track record of performing work for innovative life science, biotech, and/or pharmaceutical corporations based in the United States.
      • Strong candidates will have demonstrated scientific expertise and persuasive writing skills, deep knowledge of best practices in patent prosecution (for a prosecution position) and due diligence investigations and opinion writing (for a counseling position), and effectively present work product orally.
      • Successful candidates must be admitted to practice before the USPTO and capable of working independently.
      • The successful candidate will support partners in multiple locations and must be comfortable working independently.

    • PATENT prosecution coordinator 

      We are looking for a patent prosecution coordinator with at least 5 years of experience. Successful candidates will be responsible for a wide range of complex and substantive duties. The patent prosecution coordinator will provide patent-related paralegal services on client billable and non-billable matters including, but not limited to:  

          • managing deadlines in the firm’s docket system,
          • preparing and uploading US and PCT filings onto EFS-web,
          • assisting with the preparation of information disclosure statements,
          • managing foreign and PCT filings,
          • drafting reporting letters,
          • assisting with electronic file management,
          • providing general administrative support to the attorneys of the firm, and
          • handling other miscellaneous activities required in a small firm environment.

           

        • Candidates will be expected to take responsibility for specific client matters and will be responsible, along with the firm’s attorneys, for reviewing and meeting all deadlines assigned through the careful monitoring of docket deadlines and prioritization of daily tasks. 

           

        • Required experience:
          • five years of experience in an IP law practice providing patent prosecution related tasks,
          • a strong knowledge of US patent prosecution rules,
          • an ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints,
          • possess excellent interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively and professionally,
          • maintain a high-level of attention to detail and organization, and
          • proficiency with EFS-Web, Microsoft software applications, and docketing systems.

           

        • Preference will be given to candidates with substantial foreign filing experience.

          Part-time or full-time position. Salary commensurate with experience. 401K plan with generous matching component and health insurance. We welcome on-ramp candidates who have been out of the workforce.

    • TEchnical specialist

    • We are seeking a Technology Specialist with superior verbal and written skills and a PhD in Biology or Biochemistry from a superior institution. The Technical Specialist will provide scientific support to patent attorneys working on patent prosecution and counseling projects. Prior experience with patent law is not required as the position offers substantive training and career advancement opportunities in patent law.

      Responsibilities include:

          • advising attorneys based on technical or scientific area of expertise,
          • drafting patent applications, including examples, descriptions of figures, claims, and detailed descriptions of inventions,
          • preparing draft responses to office actions and other prosecution filings,
          • performing technical analysis of commercial products, scientific literature, and patent documents for freedom-to-operate, invalidity, and noninfringement opinions, and
          • performing research to support review of technology and patent portfolios that clients may acquire or license.

      Technical specialists at McNeill Baur are given the opportunity for significant responsibility early in their career, which provides meaningful career development towards a career as a patent agent. Technical specialists and patent agents typically work one-on-one with associates, counsel, and partners while gaining experience in a broad range of patent strategy, drafting, prosecution, and diligence matters.

      A successful candidate will be expected to take and pass the USPTO registration exam within a year of being hired. The firm will pay for a USPTO registration exam review course to supplement on the job training with the firm’s attorneys on client matters.
