Professional development and recruiting manager

We seek a strategic professional development and recruiting manager with at least five years of work experience, preferably in a law firm environment, to join our collaborative administration team. This newly formed position will develop and implement the firm’s legal talent strategy and lead all recruiting, development, and retention efforts for attorneys, patent agents, and technical specialists (patent practitioners). 

Responsibilities include:

    • manage patent practitioner recruiting, particularly targeting high potential lateral candidates,
    • develop an orientation program for lateral patent practitioner, and contribute to the onboarding process for new hires,
    • oversee patent practitioner performance reviews,
    • set competencies and firm’s developmental expectancy for different career stages and support practitioners with growth opportunities, benchmark performance, address legal skills, business skills, client development, responsibility, commitment, efficiency, and professionalism,
    • mentor patent practitioners, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and career planning and advancement goals,
    • create and maintain patent practitioner training materials including substantive legal education,
    • manage CLE compliance and work in conjunction with marketing to make sure patent practitioners have opportunities for writing and speaking on legal topics,
    • recommend marketing opportunities for patent practitioner, such as speaking and writing opportunities,
    • actively ensure all patent practitioners have appropriate work assignments and projects to ensure appropriate balance of assignment and challenge; help patent practitioners identify appropriate work assignments to develop practice area experience and depth,
    • contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion goals and objectives, recommend relationship building activities, and
    • other duties as needed.

ABOUT YOU:

The successful candidate will possess:  Excellent writing and communication skills, with cross-cultural skills and awareness related to individuals from broad backgrounds, and a sensitivity to different learning styles with knowledge of best practices in training and development. Ability to analyze patent practitioner productivity and work with the partners to distribute work according to skill set and availability. Energy and demeanor to represent the firm’s positive employment culture with applicants.

A high level of proficiency with computer system and databases, and excellent Microsoft Office skills are also a prerequisite.

Patent COUNSEL, ASSOCIATE, or Patent Agent (biology and chemistry)

We have multiple unique opportunities for patent attorneys or agents specializing in the fields of chemistry and biology. We are looking for one or more attorneys or agents with a least 5 years relevant experience in complex patent prosecution and/or patent counseling. Candidates with prior litigation experience are encouraged to apply.

ABOUT YOU:

    • You love science and ideally have an advanced biology or chemistry degree, preferably a PhD, from a superior institution.
    • You have a track record of performing work for innovative life science, biotech, and/or pharmaceutical corporations based in the United States.
    • You have strong persuasive writing skills, deep knowledge of best practices in patent prosecution (for a prosecution position) and due diligence investigations and opinion writing (for a counseling position), and effectively present work product orally.
    • You are admitted to practice before the USPTO.
    • You can support partners in multiple locations and work independently.

Primary responsibilities will include drafting applications, responses to office actions for US and foreign applications, and supporting the firm’s attorneys in the technical aspects of opinions and other counseling projects.

        Successful candidates must be admitted to practice before the USPTO and capable of working independently. An advanced degree from a superior institution is strongly preferred.  We will consider candidates for both part-time and full-time positions. The successful candidate will support partners in multiple locations and must be comfortable working independently. There is no work origination or business development requirement in this position.
